At the 2006 autumn conference at Great Hucklow, the Unitarian Church Music Society became the Unitarian Music Society (UMS), thereby simplifying its name and encouraging even greater inclusiveness. The Society's aims have not altered, but they are now clearly stated in its new constitution. The Society exists to provide a focus for all Unitarians interested in music, particularly its role in Unitarian worship, and - beyond that - to provide music education in the widest sense.
In 1928 a group of Unitarian church organists first met informally to discuss common concerns and interests. There were regular meetings throughout the thirties. The Society, more or less as it exists today, was formed in 1963 with the express purpose of embracing all aspects of church music - not just the organ. UMS holds an annual conference, occasional workshops, and publishes a journal Cantemus ("Let us sing") twice a year. We're always open to new ways of using music to support the Unitarian movement, and we'd love you to join us.
